Elon Musk has announced that his electric car company, Tesla, has passed the milestone of producing 3 million cars.

Tesla vehicles have clocked more than 40 million miles to date, and the company expects to reach 100 million miles by the end of the year.

“Congratulations to Giga Shanghai on building the millionth car. Tesla’s total production now exceeds 3 million,” Musk tweeted late Sunday.

Musk hinted earlier this month that Tesla is likely to build “at least 10 or 12 gigafactories” over the next few years.

Musk said the long-awaited Cybertruck (announced in 2019) will also be announced soon, but didn’t provide any details.

Tesla reported revenue of $16.93 billion in the second quarter, with automobiles accounting for $14.6 billion of total sales.

Musk said in an earnings call that Tesla’s new factory outside Berlin topped 1,000 cars a week in June.

Tesla was mainland China’s third-largest automaker in the first half of the year. During this period, approximately 200,000 vehicles were delivered to customers.

There will be over 413,000 EVs sold in the US in the first half of 2022, including over 64,000 electric pickup trucks.

Chris Jones, Vice President and Chief Analyst at Canalys, said:

Tesla is the leader in the BEV segment, with 565,000 vehicles sold in the first half of 2022, with strong Model Y and Model 3 sales, and a 14% market share.
