Investigation launched against Imran Khan after threatening police, justice

Pakistani police have launched an investigation into former Prime Minister Imran Khan after he made threats to the police and the judiciary during a speech at a political rally over the weekend, media reports said Monday.

Speaking at a PTI rally in Islamabad on Saturday, the former prime minister said he must prepare for the consequences while threatening legal action against the police, bureaucracy and electoral commission against his party. It warned the judiciary against “biased” attitudes. According to Dawn News, the Pakistani president and political opponents have allegedly met with his chief of staff.

When police launched an investigation, investigators said Khan may have violated the country’s anti-terrorism laws by making threats against state officials, the BBC reported.

Late Sunday night, after news of the investigation broke, hundreds of Khan’s supporters gathered outside his home in Islamabad and vowed to “take over” the capital if police tried to detain him.

Police at the scene said they were not there to arrest the former leader, but to maintain law and order.

According to Dawn news, some YouTube services reportedly faced disruption during Khan’s speech, and his live address on the TV channel was banned Saturday night by electronic media regulators.

At another political rally in Rawalpindi on Sunday, the former leader claimed the current government was trying to censor him, reports the BBC.

“What crime did Imran Khan commit? I will never accept this gang of thieves,” he told his supporters.

Khan also accused the government of blocking access to YouTube in the middle of his speech, preventing people from listening to him live.

Despite being ousted from power in April’s vote of no confidence, Khan continues to count on the support of many Pakistani voters.
