Trevor Noah defended Kanye West from detractors this week, explaining why he criticized the rapper’s decision to ban him from performing at the comedian’s Grammy Awards earlier this year.

Noah said before the Grammy Awards in April that the rapper had racially assaulted him on social media after the host of the “Daily Show” segment accused him of “harassing” his ex Kim Kardashian. He clashed with West when he threw a slanderous slur.
The Grammys barred West from appearing after he posted it on Instagram, but the comedian who hosted the ceremony tweeted in March that it had nothing to do with the decision, telling the Recording Academy, “Kanye. “I advise you not to cancel Kanye,” he said.

After West and Kardashian split, West has been widely criticized for his rhetoric against Kardashian and her ex-boyfriend Pete Davidson. And after the Saturday Night Live alum split with Kardashian, Davidson jokingly proclaimed himself “died at 28” through a fake New York Times front page.

West has made other comments that seem to suggest violence against Davidson, including rapping about beating up “Pete Davidson’s…” in a music video earlier this year. In the video, the animated version of West kidnaps an animated Davidson and buries him alive.
