With the semester in full swing, Cornell’s fall sports teams are gearing up for the upcoming season. Women’s soccer will get the ball rolling over the weekend, while men’s soccer, volleyball, sailing and golf will resume on Labor Day weekend. It could be a long season for Red, if preseason polls are any indication. Women’s soccer, volleyball, and football are all predicted to finish at or near the bottom of the Ivy League standings, while men’s soccer and field hockey are predicted to finish mid-puck.
Women’s football got off to a disappointing start to the season, going 0-2 in two matches over the weekend. Red, who was named last in the Ivy League preseason polls, will try to build on his 2021 campaign, which won the Ivy League for the first time in five years. The team will start his Sept. 24 game for Ivy in Columbia.
Another Berman Field tenant, men’s soccer, is set to return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2012 in the fall. The Reds narrowly missed out on postseason qualification after a season-ending loss to Princeton and a draw to Columbia. in the final game of the season. 2021 All-Ivy First Team forward Emeka Eneri will lead the team to the season opener at UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 2.
At Dodson Field, field hockey is ending a 31-year Ivy League title drought. In front of Red is his team, Harvard, who will be in the Final Four in 2021. In pre-season polls he was voted 4th, Red will start the campaign at Colgate on 7 September before returning to Dodson Field on 23 September. When hosting Dartmouth.
On the hard courts at Newman Arena, volleyball hopes to bounce back from a disappointing 7th place finish in 2021. Red said he was voted #7 in Ivy League preseason voting. Cornell will return to the court at his Sept. 2 Kent Invitational.
Across Campus Road at Sholkoff Field, football ranks sixth in the 2021 Ivy League. The Reds were voted last in the preseason polls, while Cornell has beaten preseason projections in six of the last seven seasons. Cornell will be held back by losing 51 senior players, but hopes a full season with sophomore quarterback Jameson Wang under center will help revitalize the offense. Red kicks off his 2022 campaign at VMI on September 17th and returns to Scherkop on September 24th to host Yale University at Homecoming.
Sprint Football will return to action in the Army on September 16th and hopes to do better than their 66-6 loss to Army last season. Red will try to improve on his 2-5 for the 2021 season.
On the water, sailing is busy with a fall schedule, and boats will get a taste of the competition before the season in full swing in spring. Sailing started his season with the Kings points his regatta on September 10 and will try to replicate his first-place finish last season. A fellow team rowing boats on the water resumes activity on Boston’s Charles River on October 23rd.
Last but not least, golf will return on September 3rd with the Alex Lagowitz Memorial Invitational in Colgate. The team will aim to crack his 6th-of-15 finish in the 2021 event.
